Opening DIRTY MATERIALS

This exhibition was originally realized by UR bureau d’architecture et d’urbanisme in collaboration with Archizoom, where it was first presented from 28 February to 15 May 2023. It is shown in a reduced version in our space

Ecological culture is becoming increasingly prominent in the design of the city today. It is the pivot that allows us to articulate new ways of seeing, acting, and operating, generating a new set of arts of practice in and for the ecological city.

The transformations that our societies and environments are currently undergoing jeopardize our way of being in the world. As such, they challenge our capacity to develop projects or, more concretely, to produce prospective visions and anchor tangible ambitions within them.

This context encourages us to imagine new ways of acting that allow us to integrate uncertainty. We must go beyond torment – not merely endure it – and invent actions capable of fitting into the emerging climate regime.

Moving from a system of autonomous objects to one of related objects opens new perspectives on interactions, forms, and processes. Organized around these three chapters, the exhibition shows how ecological culture can color, inform, and renew project culture.

La culture écologique prend une place de plus en plus importante dans la conception de la ville aujourd’hui. Elle constitue le pivot qui nous permet d’articuler de nouvelles façons de regarder, d’agir et d’opérer, générant un nouvel ensemble d’arts de la pratique dans et pour la ville écologique.

Les transformations que traversent actuellement nos sociétés et nos environnements mettent en danger notre manière d’être au monde. En ce sens, elles remettent en question notre capacité à définir des projets ou, plus concrètement, à produire des visions prospectives et à y ancrer des ambitions tangibles.

Ce contexte nous incite à imaginer de nouvelles manières d’agir qui nous permettent d’intégrer l’incertitude. Nous devons aller au-delà du tourment – ne pas le subir – et inventer des actions capables de s’inscrire dans le régime climatique en train de se mettre en place.

Passer d’un système d’objets autonomes à un système d’objets reliés ouvre de nouvelles perspectives sur les interactions, les formes et les processus. Organisée autour de ces trois chapitres, l’exposition montre comment la culture écologique peut colorer, informer et renouveler la culture du projet.

Ecologische cultuur krijgt vandaag de dag een steeds prominentere rol in het ontwerp van de stad. Ze vormt het uitgangspunt dat ons in staat stelt nieuwe manieren van zien, handelen en opereren te articuleren, en genereert een nieuwe reeks praktische kunsten in en voor de ecologische stad.

De transformaties die onze samenlevingen en omgevingen momenteel doormaken, brengen onze manier van zijn in de wereld in gevaar. Ze dagen ons uit om projecten te ontwikkelen of, meer concreet, prospectieve visies te creëren en er tastbare ambities in te verankeren.

Deze context moedigt ons aan nieuwe manieren van handelen te bedenken die ons in staat stellen onzekerheid te integreren. We moeten verder gaan dan het lijden – niet slechts doorstaan – en acties uitvinden die passen binnen het zich ontwikkelende klimaatregime.

De overgang van een systeem van autonome objecten naar een systeem van gerelateerde objecten opent nieuwe perspectieven op interacties, vormen en processen. Georganiseerd rond deze drie hoofdstukken laat de tentoonstelling zien hoe ecologische cultuur projectcultuur kan kleuren, informeren en vernieuwen.

In the framework of the publication ‘Dixit 05 – About Conditions’ (published in January by Caryatide) we are delighted to welcomed Dries Rodet for a presentation on the work of Truwant+Rodet+ on Thursday 15 May.

This was the occasion to discuss the ‘uncertain conditions’ we are confronted to in our globalized world of the 21st century and the various interpretations that result.

Cette rencontre a été l’occasion d’aborder les « conditions incertaines » auxquelles nous sommes confrontés dans notre monde globalisé du XXIᵉ siècle, ainsi que les diverses interprétations qui en découlent.

Dit moment bood de gelegenheid om de ‘onzekere omstandigheden’ te bespreken waarmee we worden geconfronteerd in onze geglobaliseerde wereld van de 21e eeuw, evenals de uiteenlopende interpretaties die daaruit voortvloeien.

Nourished by their many international experiences, Truwant + Rodet + develops its architectural practice through an interest in various broader fields of investigation such as scenography, landscape, urbanism, education and research. 

Founded in 2015 in Basel by Charlotte Truwant and Dries Rodet, the office develops its projects using a plurality of methods and collaborating with a large diversity of specialists. This approach has led them to explore the reciprocity between buildings and their context on a wide range of scales, from master planning in Switzerland to architectural renovation in Paris.

For Dixit 05 – the critical review published three times a year by Editions Caryatides – Truwant + Rodet + were invited to exchange About Conditions with Tokyo-based architects Mio Tsuneyama and Fuminori Nousaku. In the publication they address the conditions of our society, architectural discipline, and more broadly our life and perspectives in the 21st century. 

On Thursday 15 May we welcomed Dries Rodet for a presentation on the work of Truwant + Rodet + as an introduction to the publication Dixit #5. This was also the occasion to discuss the uncertain conditions that appear from our globalized world and the different interpretations that result.

Nourrie par de nombreuses expériences internationales, l’agence Truwant + Rodet + développe sa pratique architecturale à travers un intérêt pour différents champs d’investigation élargis tels que la scénographie, le paysage, l’urbanisme, l’enseignement et la recherche.

Fondée en 2015 à Bâle par Charlotte Truwant et Dries Rodet, l’agence développe ses projets en mobilisant une pluralité de méthodes et en collaborant avec une grande diversité de spécialistes. Cette approche les a conduits à explorer la réciprocité entre les bâtiments et leur contexte à des échelles très variées, allant de la planification urbaine en Suisse à la rénovation architecturale à Paris.

The exhibition presents the outcome of CUMA’s latest design studio led by Sophie Dars (Accattone) and Thierry De Cuypere (V+) between September 2024 and June 2025. CUMA is an experimental architecture studio at the Architecture Faculty of the ULB La Cambre Horta, that combines research, teaching, and speculative design. Positioned at the intersection of architecture, material studies, and environmental critique, the studio invites students to question the role of materials in shaping contemporary modes of construction and habitation. Through collective inquiry, CUMA encourages students to move beyond solution-driven design and instead engage with processes of investigation, dismantling, and rethinking existing material systems.

Over the past year, the studio focused on so-called 

, whose extraction and production rely on intensive resource consumption and generate significant environmental harm. Students conducted in-depth research into industrial processes, chemical compositions, and supply chains, while also examining the architectural imaginaries and attachments these materials have produced. Rather than rejecting them outright, the studio explored how these persistent, often unavoidable materials could be critically reused, reinterpreted, or dismantled through architectural speculation.

, bringing together narrative atlases, research documents, and architectural models developed throughout the studio. It offers a glimpse into an alternative architectural practice, one that embraces renunciation, reuse, and critical engagement with the material legacy of the 20th century.

, a publication documenting the studio’s research and projects. The book will be available for purchase during the opening and exhibition.

L'exposition présente les résultats du dernier atelier CUMA dirigé par Sophie Dars (Accattone) et Thierry De Cuypere (V+) entre septembre 2024 et juin 2025. CUMA est un atelier d'architecture expérimental de la Faculté d'architecture de l'ULB La Cambre Horta, qui combine recherche, enseignement et design spéculatif. Situé à la croisée de l'architecture, de l'étude des matériaux et de la critique environnementale, le studio invite les étudiant·e·s à s'interroger sur le rôle des matériaux dans la conception des modes de construction et d'habitation contemporains. À travers une réflexion collective, CUMA encourage les étudiant·e·s à aller au-delà d'un design axé sur les solutions et à s'engager plutôt dans des processus d'investigation, de démantèlement et de repensée des systèmes matériels existants.

Au cours de l'année écoulée, le studio s'est concentré sur les matériaux dits « sales », c'est-à-dire ceux dont l'extraction et la production reposent sur une consommation intensive de ressources et génèrent des dommages environnementaux importants. Les étudiants ont mené des recherches approfondies sur les processus industriels, les compositions chimiques et les chaînes d'approvisionnement, tout en examinant les imaginaires architecturaux et les attachements que ces matériaux ont suscités. Plutôt que de les rejeter catégoriquement, le studio a exploré comment ces matériaux persistants, souvent inévitables, pouvaient être réutilisés, réinterprétés ou démantelés de manière critique à travers la spéculation architecturale.

L'exposition présente les travaux des étudiant·e·s, réunissant des atlas narratifs, des documents de recherche et des maquettes architecturales développés tout au long du cours. Elle offre un aperçu d'une pratique architecturale alternative, qui prône le renoncement, la réutilisation et l'engagement critique envers l'héritage matériel du XXe siècle.

Le vernissage, le 22 janvier, sera accompagné du lancement du livre DIRTY MATERIALS, une publication documentant les recherches et les projets de l'atelier. Le livre sera en vente pendant le vernissage et l'exposition.

L'exposition sera ouverte jusqu'au samedi 7 février et ouverte les vendredi de 10h00 à 17h00 et les samedi de 14h00 à 18h00 ou sur demande.

De tentoonstelling presenteert het resultaat van CUMA's nieuwste ontwerpstudio onder leiding van Sophie Dars (Accattone) en Thierry De Cuypere (V+) tussen september 2024 en juni 2025. CUMA is een experimentele architectuurstudio aan de Faculteit Architectuur van de ULB La Cambre Horta, die onderzoek, onderwijs en speculatief ontwerp combineert. De studio bevindt zich op het snijvlak van architectuur, materiaalstudies en milieukritiek en nodigt studenten uit om de rol van materialen in het vormgeven van hedendaagse bouw- en woonvormen in vraag te stellen. Door middel van collectief onderzoek moedigt CUMA studenten aan om verder te kijken dan oplossingsgericht ontwerpen en zich in plaats daarvan bezig te houden met het onderzoeken, ontmantelen en heroverwegen van bestaande materiaalsystemen.

Het afgelopen jaar heeft de studio zich gericht op zogenaamde “vuile materialen”, waarvan de winning en productie gepaard gaan met een intensief verbruik van hulpbronnen en aanzienlijke milieuschade veroorzaken. Studenten hebben diepgaand onderzoek gedaan naar industriële processen, chemische samenstellingen en toeleveringsketens, en hebben tegelijkertijd gekeken naar de architectonische verbeeldingen en gehechtheden die deze materialen hebben voortgebracht. In plaats van ze zonder meer af te wijzen, heeft de studio onderzocht hoe deze hardnekkige, vaak onvermijdelijke materialen kritisch kunnen worden hergebruikt, geherinterpreteerd of ontmanteld door middel van architectonische speculatie.

De tentoonstelling presenteert het werk van de studenten en brengt verhalende atlassen, onderzoeksdocumenten en architecturale modellen samen die in de studio zijn ontwikkeld. Ze biedt een kijkje in een alternatieve architecturale praktijk, die afstand doen, hergebruik en een kritische omgang met de materiële erfenis van de 20e eeuw omarmt.

De opening op 22 januari gaat gepaard met de lancering van het boek DIRTY MATERIALS, een publicatie die het onderzoek en de projecten van de studio documenteert. Het boek zal tijdens de opening en de tentoonstelling te koop zijn.

De tentoonstelling is te zien tot zaterdag 7 februari. Open op vrijdag van 10.00 tot 17.00 uur en op zaterdag van 14.00 tot 18.00 uur of op aanvraag.

On Friday 14 March at 7:00 PM, designers Audrey Large and Théophile Blandet discussed their approaches to design and materiality, both through their individual practices and their collaborative work.

Audrey Large worked at the intersection of digital imagery and object design, exploring how image manipulation and digital fabrication could challenge the way we perceive matter. Théophile Blandet’s practice moved between functionality and abstraction, drawing from popular culture, industry, and craftsmanship. Both of their practices challenged conventional categories of design, exploring material transformation in unexpected ways.

Visitors were invited to discover their practices around a piece of their work that they exhibited at 

Le vendredi 14 mars à 19h00, les designers Audrey Large et Théophile Blandet ont discuté de leurs approches du design et de la matérialité, à travers leurs pratiques individuelles ainsi que leur travail collaboratif. Audrey Large travaille à l’intersection de l’imagerie numérique et du design d’objet, explorant la manière dont la manipulation de l’image et la fabrication numérique peuvent remettre en question notre perception de la matière. La pratique de Théophile Blandet oscille entre fonctionnalité et abstraction, s’inspirant de la culture populaire, de l’industrie et de l’artisanat. Leurs deux démarches bousculent les catégories conventionnelles du design, en explorant la transformation des matériaux de manière inattendue. Les visiteurs étaient invités à découvrir leurs pratiques autour d’une œuvre qu’ils exposaient dans l’espace.

Op vrijdag 14 maart om 19.00 uur bespraken ontwerpers Audrey Large en Théophile Blandet hun benaderingen van design en materialiteit, zowel binnen hun individuele praktijken als in hun gezamenlijke werk.

Audrey Large werkte op het snijvlak van digitale beeldvorming en objectontwerp en onderzocht hoe beeldmanipulatie en digitale fabricage de manier waarop we materie waarnemen konden uitdagen. De praktijk van Théophile Blandet bewoog zich tussen functionaliteit en abstractie en putte inspiratie uit populaire cultuur, industrie en ambacht. Beide praktijken daagden conventionele categorieën van design uit en verkenden materiaaltransformatie op onverwachte manieren.

Bezoekers werden uitgenodigd om hun praktijken te ontdekken aan de hand van een werk dat zij in de ruimte tentoonstelden.

On Friday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m., designers Audrey Large and Théophile Blandet discussed their approaches to design and materiality through their individual practices as well as their collaborative work.

Audrey Large works at the intersection of digital imagery and object design, exploring how image manipulation and digital fabrication can challenge our perception of matter. Théophile Blandet’s practice oscillates between functionality and abstraction, drawing inspiration from popular culture, industry, and craftsmanship. Both approaches disrupt conventional design categories by exploring the transformation of materials in unexpected ways.

Visitors were invited to discover their practices through a work they presented in the space.

Le vendredi 14 mars, les designers Audrey Large et Théophile Blandet ont présenté leurs approches du design et de la matérialité, à travers leurs pratiques individuelles ainsi que leur travail collaboratif.

Audrey Large travaille à l’intersection de l’imagerie numérique et du design d’objet, explorant comment la manipulation de l’image et la fabrication numérique peu remettre en question notre perception de la matière. Elle est diplômée avec mention 

 du Master Social Design de la Design Academy Eindhoven en 2017. Elle a été designer en résidence à la Jan Van Eyck Academie à Maastricht entre 2019 et 2020. Elle a reçu le Dutch Design Award dans la catégorie Young Designer en 2021, ainsi que le Dezeen Emerging Designer Award en 2023.

La pratique de Théophile Blandet évolu entre fonctionnalité et abstraction, s’inspirant de la culture populaire, de l’industrie et de l’artisanat. Son travail explore ces notions à travers des objets « infra-ordinaires » qui résistent à toute tentative de catégorisation. Il est diplômé avec mention 

 du Master Contextual Design de la Design Academy Eindhoven en 2017.

Leurs pratiques respectives remettent en question les catégories conventionnelles du design et exploraient la transformation des matériaux de manière inattendue. Nous avons été ravis de les accueillir dans notre espace et d’en apprendre davantage sur leurs pratiques autour d’une pièce de leur travail présentée à cette occasion.

With more than 150 interventions over ten editions, the festival has created a platform for experimentation, dialogue, and collective experience in the contemporary city.

In parallel in Belgium, Horst Arts & Music has been developing a unique trajectory at the intersection of architecture, music, and visual arts. Since its founding in 2014, and especially after relocating to the former military site of ASIAT in Vilvoorde in 2019, Horst has been reimagining how cultural programming can regenerate urban space. Through experimental stage architecture, site-specific installations, and immersive electronic music experiences, Horst activates spaces in transition and fosters bottom-up city-making. The festival serves as both a cultural event and a catalyst for long-term urban and artistic development.

Through key architectural projects, he examined the greenhouse as a fully-fledged architectural device, addressing interior–exterior relationships, climatic gradients, passive energy strategies, and seasonal rhythms. This perspective opened the way for a climate-based rethinking of architectural typologies.

By looking at key projects it is possible to frame the greenhouse as an architectural device with distinct characteristics and agency, and it is possible to trace its evolution from botanical utility to domestic significance.

Themes linked to greenhouse spaces, such as relations between interior and exterior, functional indeterminacy, thermal gradients, passive energy strategies and seasonal patterns, are explored for their broader architectural implications.

By considering the greenhouse as a collection of spaces with distinct climatic identities, it is possible to challenge traditional architectural typologies and argue for a fundamental revision — a climate-based approach to typology.

Tiago P. Borges recently earned his PhD degree in architectural theory and history at EPFL with a work that examines the interplay between greenhouses and domestic spaces from a typological and historical framework. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher and leads the Greenhouse Studies design studio at Laboratory EAST, EPFL.

Tiago P. Thema’s die nauw verbonden zijn met serres — zoals de relatie tussen binnen en buiten, functionele onbepaaldheid, thermische gradiënten, passieve energie­strategieën en seizoensgebonden patronen — worden onderzocht in hun bredere architecturale implicaties.

Door de serre te beschouwen als een verzameling ruimtes met specifieke klimatologische identiteiten, wordt het mogelijk om traditionele architecturale typologieën ter discussie te stellen en te pleiten voor een fundamentele herziening: een klimaatgerichte benadering van typologie.

. The choice of photography reveals a variety of projects that together 

 in which materiality, color and geometry express the sensibilities and singularities of forty different offices.The collectiveness of the work is not intended to be generic, on the contrary, it pays particular attention to the architectural details, which have a status on their own. Where colour is present in the majority of the photos, these details are highlighted and dynamise the collection thanks to the pronounced use of flash, off-axis framing and black-and-white treatment. Next to these pictures, various text contributions from different backgrounds accompany these images to shine light and offer a reading of that emerging scene of architects.

 dans lesquelles la matérialité, la couleur et la géométrie expriment les sensibilités et les singularités de quarante bureaux différents. Le caractère collectif de l'ouvrage n'a pas pour but d'être générique, au contraire, il accorde une attention particulière aux détails architecturaux, qui ont un statut à part entière. La couleur étant présente dans la majorité des photos, ces détails sont mis en valeur et dynamisent la collection grâce à l'utilisation prononcée du flash, au cadrage hors axe et au traitement en noir et blanc. À côté de ces images, divers textes provenant de différents horizons accompagnent ces images pour éclairer et offrir une lecture de cette scène émergente d'architectes.

After five months of research and experimentation within the framework of Residency #004, Stefanie Everaert and Theo De Meyer, founders of Stand Van Zaken, return to

During their residency, the duo reflected on their five-years experience of inhabiting a family-owned greenhouse on the outskirts of Ghent. A space that gradually evolved from a tomato-growing structure into a place for living, learning, building, and sharing.

This residency was an opportunity to document their domestic life in the greenhouse, giving themselves the possibility to look back at what it means to inhabit space seasonally, from the depths of winter to the beginning of summer. Through this process, they explored how life in a vast, climate-responsive environment can challenge and expand our understanding of home.

The resulting exhibition and accompanying publication pay tribute to this experience, gathering a rich body of material that captures the many ways of occupying space and playing with the boundaries of domestic habits.

In this talk, Stefanie and Theo will share insights from their life in the greenhouse, the empirical research they conducted and tools they developed along the way. They will start a discussion about what this form of migratory, adaptable living can teach us about freedom and space today.

Au cours de leur résidence, le duo a réfléchi à leurs cinq années d’expérience passées dans une serre familiale en périphérie de Gand. Un espace qui, progressivement, s’est transformé d’une structure destinée à la culture de tomates en un lieu de vie, d’apprentissage, de construction et de partage.

Cette résidence a été l’occasion de documenter leur vie domestique dans la serre, leur offrant la possibilité de revenir sur ce que signifie habiter un espace de manière saisonnière, des profondeurs de l’hiver au début de l’été. À travers ce processus, ils ont exploré comment la vie dans un vaste environnement réactif au climat peut remettre en question et élargir notre compréhension de la notion de foyer.

L’exposition qui en résulte, ainsi que la publication qui l’accompagne, rendent hommage à cette expérience, en rassemblant un riche ensemble de matériaux qui témoignent des multiples manières d’occuper l’espace et de jouer avec les limites des habitudes domestiques.

Lors de cette conférence, Stefanie et Theo partageront leurs réflexions issues de leur vie dans la serre, les recherches empiriques qu’ils ont menées et les outils qu’ils ont développés en cours de route. Ils ouvriront une discussion sur ce que cette forme de vie migratoire et adaptable peut nous apprendre aujourd’hui en matière de liberté et d’espace.
